November 28th- Last class for the semester

Class,

This week, I would like you all to finish reading Huckleberry Finn and prepare for your literary circle. We will also have a midterm jeopardy-style game, so review your notes and the blog. I will have questions on every major topic covered. :) We will not have a regular quiz. Also, please bring in your Oxford Book of American Poetry. We are going to be covering Robert Frost in class. I'm not sure we will get the other two stories assigned covered so I will move those to January.

We will also have our white elephant party. Remember, this is a gag gift. You are not supposed to go out and buy something, but find some useless/unwanted item from your home to re-gift. Our final class will hopefully be a fun one. We will have an ugly sweater contest with prizes! If you would like to prepare and share a treat, you are welcome to do so. I will bring in donuts for all of you since there was a THREE-WAY TIE on the quiz. I certainly didn't expect that! That's a good sign. Each table is pretty evenly divided.

I will cover history for next week, so you do not need to do anything other than review for your midterm game. Those of you that still owe me an essay, bring those in Tuesday.

Remember, you will need to read Jack London's Call of the Wild over Christmas break, so make sure you order your copy soon!

Tiny House Living and Transcendentalism

This week's class will explore transcendentalism, Emerson, and Thoreau. But like most of the topics we've studied so far, we can find modern connections. Transcendentalism was a religious movement that grew out of Romanticism between 1836-1860. We can define it as a spiritual, philosophical, literary movement with ties to the Unitarian Church around Boston. Like Romanticism, this movement emphasized individual rights and inspiration, the latter, especially within nature. Transcendentalists believed that individuals can discover truth for themselves, rather than learning it through tradition. It differs from Romanticism in that it focused on God. Transcendentalists believed that God was everywhere and could be discovered through intuition and that all people have a divine inner light. September 12th Review and Homework

Sorry for the late post. I wanted to have this up last night, but I host a writing group once a month. Yes, I am still working on my own writing. Yesterday, you all read The Declaration of Independence ! That's pretty awesome, right? I think that already puts you above most of the population. And we tackled Phillis Wheatley's "Providence," which is certainly no easy task. Not only are you dabbling in some of America's greatest works, you are learning some very important analysis skills. This is something you will use your entire life! Even if you do not choose to read lots of great literature when you leave my class, (but I hope to convince you otherwise), you will be surrounded by music, advertisements, arguments, and political debates.
